The Wisdom of King Solomon and Two Mothers

King Solomon of ancient Israel was renowned throughout the civilized world for his extraordinary wisdom, justice, and keen insight into human psychology. One morning, while holding court, two weeping women were ushered before his royal throne holding a solitary living infant boy...
Completed Story:
Both women lived under the same roof and had given birth to baby boys within days of each other. However, during the previous night, one mother had inadvertently smothered her child while asleep. Discovering her infant dead, she secretly crept in the darkness and exchanged the deceased baby for the living child of her sleeping companion. When dawn broke, a fierce altercation erupted, each passionately claiming the living child as her own flesh and blood.
There were no independent witnesses to verify their competing claims. The courtiers and wise counselors were bewildered, unable to determine who spoke the truth. King Solomon observed both women calmly. Then, with an expression of solemn detachment, he turned to the royal executioner and commanded, "Draw your sharp sword and cleave the living infant in twain! Give one half to the first woman and the other half to the second."
Upon hearing this terrifying decree, the second woman nodded coldly, saying, "Let it be neither mine nor hers; divide the child!" But the first woman let out a heartbreaking shriek, fell at the feet of the monarch, and sobbed, "O merciful King! Spare the innocent baby's life! I beg you, do not slay him! Give the living child to the other woman, but let him live!"
Instantly, King Solomon raised his hand and proclaimed, "Halt! Do not touch the child! The woman who begged for the infant’s life is his true mother, for her heart is filled with genuine maternal love and sacrifice." The infant was restored to the weeping, grateful mother, and all the people marveled at the divine wisdom of their sovereign.
