Bayazid Bostami, who later became one of the most revered Sufi saints in Islamic history, was deeply devoted to his mother from his earliest childhood.
বাংলা অনুবাদ: হযরত বায়েজিদ বোস্তামী শৈশব থেকেই মায়ের প্রতি গভীর শ্রদ্ধাশীল ও অনুগত ছিলেন।
One bitter winter night, young Bayazid was sitting by the lamplight, deeply immersed in reading his books. His ailing mother was asleep in bed. In the middle of the night, she woke up feeling parched and called out weakly, 'Bayazid, my son, please fetch me a glass of water.'
বাংলা অনুবাদ: এক তীব্র শীতের রাতে বালক বায়েজিদ প্রদীপের আলোয় পড়াশোনা করছিলেন। তাঁর অসুস্থ মা ঘুমিয়ে ছিলেন। হঠাৎ মা জেগে উঠে দুর্বল কণ্ঠে বললেন, 'বায়েজিদ, আমাকে এক গ্লাস পানি দাও।'
Bayazid sprang to his feet immediately and went to the earthen pitcher, only to find it completely bone-dry. Not wishing to disturb his sick mother, he picked up the pitcher and walked through the freezing, pitch-black night to the distant communal fountain.
বাংলা অনুবাদ: বায়েজিদ পানি আনতে গিয়ে দেখলেন কলসিতে এক ফোঁটা পানিও নেই। মাকে না জাগিয়ে তিনি রাতের আঁধারে দূরের ঝরনা থেকে পানি আনতে ছুটলেন।
Braving the biting wind, he filled the pitcher with fresh, cold water and hurried back home. But upon reaching his mother's bedside with a filled glass, he found that she had drifted back into a deep, exhausted sleep.
বাংলা অনুবাদ: শীতের তীব্র বাতাস উপেক্ষা করে পানি নিয়ে ঘরে ফিরে তিনি দেখলেন মা আবার গভীর ঘুমে তলিয়ে গেছেন।
Bayazid faced a moral dilemma: waking her would disrupt her badly needed rest, while setting the glass aside might cause delay if she woke up thirsty again. He resolved to stand motionless beside her bed holding the glass in his hands.
বাংলা অনুবাদ: মাকে ডাকলে তাঁর ঘুমের ব্যাঘাত ঘটবে, আবার চলে গেলে মা পানি চাইলে দেরি হবে—এই ভেবে বায়েজিদ সারারাত পানির গ্লাস হাতে মায়ের শিয়রে দাঁড়িয়ে রইলেন।
The cold was intense, and the water in the glass chilled his fingers until they went numb. Yet, he stood upright throughout the long, dark night. At dawn, when the mother opened her eyes, she was astonished to see her young son standing shivering with the glass of water. Overwhelmed by tears of profound love, she raised her hands and prayed to Allah to make her son one of the greatest spiritual luminaries of the world. Her heartfelt prayer was accepted.
বাংলা অনুবাদ: তীব্র ঠান্ডায় তাঁর হাত অবশ হয়ে গেল, তবুও তিনি দাঁড়িয়ে রইলেন। ফজরের সময় মা চোখ মেলে ছেলেকে ঠকঠক করে কাঁপতে দেখে কেঁদে ফেললেন। তিনি দু'হাত তুলে আল্লাহর দরবারে দোয়া করলেন যেন তাঁর ছেলে পৃথিবীর শ্রেষ্ঠ অলিদের একজন হন। মায়ের সেই দোয়া আল্লাহ কবুল করেছিলেন।
