The Greedy Farmer and the Goose of Golden Eggs
Read the beginning of the story and complete the cautionary tale:
Once upon a time, a humble farmer possessed a miraculous goose that possessed an astonishing gift: every morning, without fail, she laid a solid, glittering egg of pure gold. Selling these precious eggs in the city market, the farmer quickly rose from poverty to immense wealth...
Completed Story:
As his riches multiplied, so did his greed. Instead of feeling grateful for his steady daily windfall, the farmer grew increasingly impatient. He began grumbling to his wife, "Why should we wait day after day for a single egg? Surely, inside that magical bird’s belly, there must be a giant treasure trove of hundreds of golden eggs! If we cut her open right now, we can extract the entire hoard in an instant and become the wealthiest family in the kingdom!"
Blinded by avarice, the foolish couple resolved to slaughter the bird. The next morning, fetching a sharp butcher’s knife, the farmer seized the harmless goose and split her stomach open.
To his utter horror and despair, the internal anatomy of the goose was identical to that of any ordinary bird. There was no gold hoard, not even a single golden egg inside. His miraculous source of daily fortune was dead, slain by his own reckless hands.
The farmer sank to the earthen floor, clutching his head in weeping agony. He had traded guaranteed lifelong prosperity for an illusion, learning too late the ruinous nature of unbridled greed.
