Dengue Fever and Its Prevention
Dengue fever is a severe, painful, and potentially fatal viral infection transmitted to humans through the bites of infected female Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. Over the past several years, dengue outbreaks in tropical nations, particularly across urban centers of Bangladesh like Dhaka, Chattogram, and Barishal, have assumed epidemic proportions during and immediately after the monsoon season. Characterized by sudden high fever, excruciating joint and muscle pain—often referred to as 'breakbone fever'—severe headaches, retro-orbital pain behind the eyes, nausea, and distinctive measles-like skin rashes, dengue can rapidly deteriorate into life-threatening Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) or Dengue Shock Syndrome if left unmanaged.
The proliferation of the Aedes mosquito is inextricably linked with careless human urbanization and stagnant clean water. Unlike mosquitoes that breed in muddy sewage, Aedes breeds preferentially in small collections of clear, stagnant water found in discarded plastic bottles, tin cans, coconut shells, untended flowerpots, rooftop gardens, vehicle tires, and construction sites. Aedes mosquitoes are diurnal, biting aggressively during early morning and late afternoon hours. Because no universal antiviral treatment exists for dengue, clinical management relies heavily on early blood testing (NS1 antigen and Complete Blood Count), absolute rest, oral rehydration, and careful monitoring of blood platelet counts.
Consequently, preventive measures and environmental sanitation represent the only foolproof shields against dengue. Citizens must adopt the strict habit of discarding stagnant water from flower tubs, AC trays, and containers at least once every three days. Municipal city corporations must conduct intensive larva-destroying spraying (larviciding) and fogging operations while imposing fines on derelict building owners harboring breeding pools. Using mosquito nets while sleeping, applying insect repellents, and wearing long-sleeved garments provide essential personal protection. Through united civic hygiene and vigilance, the menace of dengue can be successfully contained.
