Deforestation means the indiscriminate cutting down, burning, and destruction of forests and trees on a massive scale without replanting them. In Bangladesh and around the world, deforestation has assumed alarming proportions due to rapid population growth, rapid urbanization, agricultural expansion, commercial logging, and brick kilns burning firewood. When dense forests are cleared, nature loses its natural green protective shield. Trees play an indispensable role in maintaining ecological balance by absorbing hazardous carbon dioxide and releasing life-giving oxygen through photosynthesis. Deforestation destroys the natural habitats of millions of wild animals, birds, and insects, leading to tragic species extinction and biological imbalance. Furthermore, tree roots bind topsoil firmly; when trees are destroyed, heavy rainfall causes catastrophic topsoil erosion, hill collapses in Chittagong Hill Tracts, and severe river siltation leading to recurring flash floods. Deforestation also accelerates global warming and erratic climate changes by reducing carbon sequestration. To safeguard our environment, we must halt illegal logging immediately, enforce environmental laws strictly, plant more trees, and create massive public awareness across the country.
