A day labourer is an unskilled or semi-skilled manual worker who survives on daily wages earned through hard physical toil from morning till evening. In Bangladesh, day labourers form a significant part of the working population, engaged in laborious manual jobs such as digging earth, carrying heavy brick loads at construction sites, harvesting crops in fields, or loading goods onto trucks and cargo boats. Every morning, hundreds of poor day labourers gather with spades and baskets at local labor markets, waiting anxiously for contractors or employers to hire them for the day. If hired, a day labourer toils relentlessly under the scorching sun or in heavy rain without complaints. In return for his exhausting sweat, he receives a meager daily wage that is barely enough to buy rice, salt, and lentils for his hungry family. If he fails to find work on any day, his family goes to bed on empty stomachs. Despite being the real architects of our infrastructure, bridges, and buildings, day labourers live in cramped, unhygienic slums, deprived of medical care, education for their children, and social security.
