Once an honest woodcutter lived in a remote village near a dense forest. He was very poor and earned a meager livelihood by selling firewood cut from the forest trees.

One bright morning, he was chopping wood from a tall tree on the bank of a deep, flowing river. Suddenly, his iron axe slipped from his sweaty grasp and plunged into the swirling water. The river was deep and treacherous, and the woodcutter did not know how to swim.
বাংলা অনুবাদ: এক রৌদ্রোজ্জ্বল সকালে সে একটি গভীর ও খরস্রোতা নদীর তীরে গাছের ডাল কাটছিল। হঠাৎ তার ঘর্মাক্ত হাত থেকে লোহার কুড়ালটি পিছলে ছিটকে গভীর নদীর পানিতে পড়ে গেল। নদীটি গভীর ছিল এবং কাঠুরিয়া সাঁতার জানত না।
He sat on the riverbank and began weeping bitterly, lamenting, 'Alas! My axe was my sole means of feeding my starving family! What will become of us now?'

Moved by his genuine distress, the Water Goddess appeared out of the shimmering water and asked kindly, 'Why are you crying so bitterly, my son?' The woodcutter poured out his sorrowful plight.

The Goddess dived into the depths and returned with a radiant golden axe. 'Is this yours?' she asked. The honest man shook his head, 'No, this precious golden axe is not mine.' She dived again and presented a sparkling silver axe. Again the woodcutter replied, 'No, mine was an ordinary iron axe.'

Finally, the Goddess brought forth his rusted iron axe. The woodcutter cried out in joy, 'Yes, this is my humble axe!' Impressed beyond measure by his absolute integrity and truthfulness, the Goddess rewarded him with all three axes—gold, silver, and iron. His unwavering honesty transformed his life.
