Street children, commonly known as 'Tokai' in Bangladesh, are unfortunate homeless children who live and wander on the streets without family shelter or parental protection. Poverty, broken families, abandonment, and natural disasters like river erosion force these helpless children onto the sidewalks, railway platforms, bus terminals, and parks. Instead of carrying school bags and wearing clean uniforms, they wander with sacks on their shoulders, collecting plastic bottles, scrap paper, and waste to sell for a little food. They sleep under open skies on cold footpaths, wearing torn, dirty clothes, and often suffer from malnutrition and severe skin diseases. Devoid of love, education, and moral guidance, many street children fall prey to criminals and get addicted to sniffing toxic shoe glue (Dandee). Society often treats them with harsh cruelty and neglect. Every child deserves love, shelter, and schooling. Both the government and humanitarian organizations must establish free residential rehabilitation centers, schools, and medical facilities to help these street children live with human dignity.

পথশিশু, যাদের বাংলাদেশে সাধারণত 'টোকাই' নামেও ডাকা হয়, তারা হলো পরিবারহীন ও আশ্রয়হীন এমন কিছু অসহায় শিশু যারা ফুটপাতে বড় হয়। চরম দারিদ্র্য, বাবা-মায়ের বিচ্ছেদ এবং নদীভাঙনের মতো দুর্যোগের কারণে অনেক শিশু নিঃস্ব হয়ে রাস্তায় এসে আশ্রয় নেয়। যেখানে তাদের হাতে বই-খাতা থাকার কথা, সেখানে তারা ছেঁড়া জামা পরে মাথায় বস্তা নিয়ে রাস্তায় প্লাস্টিক, কাগজ ও বোতল কুড়িয়ে দিন পার করে। তারা খোলা আকাশের নিচে রেল স্টেশন বা ফুটপাতে ঘুমায় এবং তীব্র পুষ্টিহীনতা ও চর্মরোগে ভোগে। ভালোবাসা ও শিক্ষার আলো না পাওয়ায় অনেক পথশিশু মাদকাসক্ত ও অপরাধীদের খপ্পরে পড়ে নষ্ট হয়ে যায়। অথচ এই শিশুদেরও ভালোবাসা ও সুন্দর জীবনের অধিকার আছে। সরকারের পাশাপাশি বিত্তবান ও স্বেচ্ছাসেবী সংগঠনগুলোর উচিত তাদের জন্য বিনামূল্যে থাকা, খাওয়া ও শিক্ষার ব্যবস্থা করে তাদেরকে সমাজের স্বাভাবিক আলোয় ফিরিয়ে আনা।
