Technical and Vocational Education in Bangladesh
Technical and vocational education and training (TVET) has emerged as the single most potent and pragmatic solution to eradicate youth unemployment and accelerate the industrial growth of Bangladesh. For decades, our traditional education system has remained heavily skewed toward general, theoretical, and liberal arts degrees. Consequently, universities produce hundreds of thousands of graduates every year who possess theoretical knowledge on paper but lack practical, market-ready, and technical skills demanded by contemporary employers. This systemic mismatch has spawned an acute crisis of educated unemployment, while industrial sectors paradoxically suffer from a severe shortage of skilled mechanics, technicians, electricians, and coders.
Technical and vocational education bridges this critical chasm by providing hands-on, competency-based instruction in practical trades such as computer hardware, software programming, automotive repair, plumbing, refrigeration, electronics, industrial sewing, and agricultural automation. Unlike lengthy four-year theoretical degrees, vocational training enables young men and women from diverse socio-economic backgrounds to acquire specialized practical expertise in short-duration programs and secure well-paying jobs or establish independent micro-enterprises immediately upon graduation.
Furthermore, skilled technical personnel are in immense demand across international labor markets in the Middle East, East Asia, and Europe. By deploying certified technicians and computer professionals instead of unskilled physical laborers, Bangladesh can dramatically multiply its foreign remittance earnings and elevate its global economic standing. To realize this vision, the government and educational authorities must dismantle the outdated social prejudice that unfairly stigmatizes vocational education. Upgrading polytechnic institutes with modern equipment, revising curricula in tandem with industry leaders, and offering attractive stipends will inspire millions of young students to embrace technical education, transforming our massive population into productive human capital.
