The Boastful Hare and the Resolute Tortoise
Read the following opening and complete the moral narrative:
A swift hare living in a meadow never missed an opportunity to mock a slow-moving tortoise for his sluggish pace. "You take an entire day just to crawl across a single field!" the hare would brag with arrogant chuckles. Tired of the incessant taunts, the quiet tortoise smiled and said, "Why don't we test our speed in an official race to the distant oak tree?"...
Completed Story:
The hare laughed uproariously, accepting the challenge as a hilarious joke. The woodland animals gathered, and a wise fox flagged off the contest. In a flash of dust, the hare darted ahead, leaving the tortoise far behind plodding steadily with heavy steps.
By midday, the hare was already within sight of the winning post. Looking back and seeing no trace of the tortoise, the hare thought disdainfully, "That slow fellow will not catch up for hours. I have ample time to take a refreshing nap under this shady apple tree." Curling up in the cool breeze, the overconfident hare soon fell into a deep, uninterrupted slumber.
Meanwhile, the tortoise continued his march. He did not stop to rest, nor did he look about in distraction; step by step, inch by inch, he crawled relentlessly under the blazing sun. Hours passed, and he quietly walked past the snoring hare.
When the hare finally awoke, the sun was sinking beneath the horizon. Rubbing his eyes, he sprang to his feet and raced toward the oak tree at breakneck speed. But to his utter astonishment and dismay, he found the tortoise already resting peacefully at the finish line, warmly cheered by the forest spectators. The arrogant hare hung his ears in bitter shame.
