Several factors contribute to this relentless price escalation. Dishonest syndicate traders and hoarders artificially hoard food supplies in warehouses to create artificial shortages and reap excessive profits. High international fuel and transport prices, currency devaluation, extortion on highways, and sudden crop damages caused by floods also push commodity prices upward. When market prices soar while family incomes remain fixed, poor families are forced to cut down their daily meals and nutrition. To control price hike, the government must dismantle illegal business syndicates, enforce strict regular market monitoring through mobile courts, eliminate extortion, and sell essential goods at subsidized rates through open market sales (OMS).
