Price Hike of Essential Commodities
The relentless price hike of essential commodities has become one of the most agonizing socio-economic hardships confronting the ordinary citizens of Bangladesh today. Items essential for daily survival—such as rice, flour, cooking oil, onions, pulses, eggs, vegetables, and life-saving medicines—have witnessed abnormal and volatile price spikes in kitchen markets across the country. For fixed-income earners, low-wage laborers, and the lower-middle-class populace whose salaries remain stagnant, every trip to the market has become an excruciating test of endurance, forcing families to compromise drastically on nutrition, healthcare, and their children's education.
A multiplicity of domestic and global factors contributes to this destabilizing inflation. Internationally, geopolitical conflicts, disrupted global maritime shipping, and volatility in global fuel and fertilizer prices raise import expenditures significantly. Domestically, however, the problem is severely exacerbated by artificial market manipulation orchestrated by greedy merchant syndicates, illegal hoarders, and multiple layers of extortionist middlemen who control wholesale and retail supplies. Unscrupulous traders frequently withhold stockpiles in warehouses to engineer artificial shortages, thereby inflating retail prices arbitrarily. Additionally, seasonal floods and cyclones damage standing crops, compounding supply constraints.
Addressing this socio-economic malaise demands proactive, decisive, and multi-pronged governmental interventions. The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection and mobile courts must maintain continuous surveillance to dismantle hoarding syndicates and penalize price-gougers sternly. The Open Market Sale (OMS) and Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) subsidized ration distribution programs must be expanded transparently to reach vulnerable rural and urban families. Encouraging agricultural cooperatives and modern cold storage facilities will empower farmers to sell directly to consumers, eliminating exploitative middlemen and stabilizing market prices effectively.
