Road Accidents in Bangladesh: Causes and Remedies

Road accidents have emerged as one of the most alarming, recurrent, and tragic crises plaguing daily life in Bangladesh. Almost every single day, national newspapers and electronic media are inundated with heartbreaking reports of fatal collisions, overturning buses, and crushed pedestrians on highways and urban streets. This catastrophic loss of valuable human lives not only causes irreparable trauma to bereaved families but also deals a massive blow to the national economy by robbing the country of young students, professionals, and productive breadwinners. According to transport safety organizations, thousands of fatalities occur annually on Bangladeshi roads, making road safety an urgent public health priority.

The root causes underlying this crisis are multifaceted. Foremost among them is reckless driving, excessive speeding, and reckless overtaking by poorly trained, exhausted, or uncertified drivers who routinely operate without valid licenses. Furthermore, a vast majority of public transports and commercial trucks are mechanically unfit, lacking functional brakes, standardized tires, and proper headlights. Structural flaws such as narrow highways without road dividers, hazardous sharp bends, faulty traffic signals, illegal roadside markets, and pervasive footpath encroachments force pedestrians to walk directly in the line of high-speed vehicular traffic. Added to this is the pervasive violation of basic traffic rules and lenient enforcement of road safety laws.

To eliminate this ongoing massacre, rigorous structural reforms must be enacted without compromise. The Road Transport Act must be enforced strictly with exemplary penalties for speed violations and unlicensed drivers. Automated digital speed cameras and weight stations should be installed on all national highways. Moreover, public footpaths must be reclaimed from illegal vendors, zebra crossings made safe, and defensive driving licenses awarded strictly through computerized driving examinations. Through collective awareness among drivers, passengers, and traffic police, we can transform our roads into safe corridors of life rather than death traps.
