Padma Multipurpose Bridge
The Padma Multipurpose Bridge is the most monumental engineering feat and symbol of national pride in the history of independent Bangladesh. Spanning across the mighty and turbulent Padma River, this two-tier steel truss bridge with a four-lane highway on the upper deck and a single-track railway on the lower deck connects Mawa in Munshiganj to Janjira in Shariatpur. Measuring 6.15 kilometers in length and 18.18 meters in width, it is the longest bridge in Bangladesh and one of the deepest foundation bridges in the entire world. What makes this bridge truly extraordinary is that it was constructed entirely with the domestic financial resources of Bangladesh, demonstrating the country's self-reliance, courage, and economic resilience before the global community.
The inauguration of the Padma Bridge on June 25, 2022, opened a revolutionary epoch in the transport and economic landscape of the country. Prior to its construction, millions of people in 21 south-western districts had to endure excruciating delays and risks navigating unpredictable river ferries, especially during turbulent monsoons and dense winter fogs. With the bridge operational, travel time between Dhaka and the southern districts has been reduced from twelve hours to barely two to three hours. It facilitates direct connectivity for agricultural produce, fish, and industrial raw materials to reach urban markets seamlessly, preserving perishable goods and guaranteeing fair prices for rural farmers.
Economists project that the bridge contributes more than 1.2 to 1.5 percent to the national GDP annually, accelerating industrialization, creating modern tourism hubs in Kuakata and the Sundarbans, and facilitating the Payra and Mongla sea ports. In essence, the Padma Multipurpose Bridge is not merely a concrete and steel structure; it stands as an enduring testament to Bangladesh’s unyielding determination, dignity, and unstoppable journey toward sustainable economic prosperity.
