Food Adulteration and Public Health Hazard
Food adulteration has escalated into a horrific, insidious, and pervasive public health crisis in Bangladesh, posing an existential threat to millions of innocent citizens. Food is the fundamental fuel of biological life, required to sustain bodily growth, vitality, and immunity against illness. Tragically, driven by unbridled greed, extreme commercial opportunism, and complete moral bankruptcy, a large section of unscrupulous manufacturers, wholesalers, and food vendors routinely poison everyday consumables by adding toxic chemicals, banned industrial dyes, and dangerous non-food contaminants.
The extent of food adulteration spans almost every edible item available in retail markets. Fresh fruits like mangoes, bananas, and apples are artificially ripened using poisonous calcium carbide and bathed in formalin to prevent natural decay. Toxic textile dyes like auramine and metanil yellow are blended into sweets, turmeric powder, and spices to enhance their visual appeal. Edible oils are frequently diluted with industrial engine oils and burnt grease, while dairy milk is adulterated with starch, chalk, detergent, and contaminated water. Fish and meat sold in markets are preserved with formaldehyde, a potent carcinogen that wreaks havoc on human physiology.
The health consequences of consuming these poisoned foods are catastrophic. Medical oncologists and nephrologists point out that the alarming exponential surge in chronic kidney failure, liver cirrhosis, cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders, and malignant cancers across Bangladesh is directly correlated with chronic dietary exposure to adulterated food. Children and pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to permanent developmental harm. To halt this silent genocide, the state must implement zero-tolerance legal measures. Mobile courts should impose non-bailable prison sentences and seal off offending factories permanently. Establishing state-of-the-art testing laboratories and empowering vigilant consumer watchdogs will safeguard our dining tables and protect future generations.
