Nelson Mandela was one of the greatest global leaders of the twentieth century and an immortal icon of peace, forgiveness, and human rights. Born in South Africa in 1918, he spent his entire life fighting against the cruel racial discrimination known as apartheid, under which the white minority government oppressed the black majority. Because of his struggle for equality and freedom, Mandela was arrested and imprisoned for twenty-seven long years on Robben Island. In spite of unbearable suffering and isolation, his courage and determination never broke. When he was finally released in 1990, he did not seek revenge against his former oppressors; instead, he preached national reconciliation, unity, and love. In 1993, he was awarded the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize. In 1994, he was democratically elected as the first Black President of South Africa.
