Paper is one of the most indispensable and valuable inventions in human civilization, without which modern education, literature, and administration would be impossible. The manufacturing of paper is an interesting and scientific industrial process. The primary raw materials used for making paper are bamboo, wood logs, grass, rags, and recycled waste paper. In paper mills, tree logs or bamboo are first cut into small chips and thoroughly washed. These chips are cooked in large industrial boilers with water and chemicals like sodium hydroxide to dissolve lignin and extract cellulose fibers, producing a soft material called wood pulp. Next, the pulp is bleached using chlorine or hydrogen peroxide to make it purely white. Sizing chemicals and starch are added to give the paper strength and water resistance. The watery pulp is then spread evenly onto giant moving mesh screens where water is drained away. Heavy heated steel rollers press, dry, and smooth the continuous sheet into crisp rolls of paper, which are finally cut into various standard sizes for writing and printing.
