Rooted in deep patriarchal greed and social corruption, this evil practice reduces holy marriage into a humiliating business transaction. Poor and middle-class parents often sell their small lands or take loans with high interest rates to satisfy the greedy demands of the groom's family. If the dowry amount is not paid completely, innocent newlywed brides are subjected to physical torture, mental harassment, starvation, and even murder by poison or acid throwing. Many helpless girls commit suicide to escape this unbearable humiliation. Although Bangladesh has strict legal statutes, including the Dowry Prohibition Act, the practice continues secretly due to social acceptance and lack of enforcement. To eliminate this curse, young men must take a solemn vow never to accept dowry, girls must be educated and economically self-reliant, and society must boycott greedy dowry-seekers completely.
