Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, affectionately called 'Begum Mujib', was a noble, courageous, and wise woman in the political history of Bangladesh. Born on August 8, 1930, in Tungipara, Gopalganj, she was married to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at an early age. Throughout Bangabandhu's turbulent political life, when he spent years behind bars in Pakistani prisons, Begum Mujib managed their family with extraordinary patience, modesty, and strength. She looked after the education and well-being of her five children, including Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, while providing hidden financial and moral support to the leaders and workers of the Awami League. During the crucial days of the 1969 Mass Upsurge and the historic speech of March 7, 1971, her calm and courageous advice guided Bangabandhu to take firm national decisions. She led a very simple life without any attraction for luxury or power. On the tragic night of August 15, 1975, she was brutally assassinated along with Bangabandhu. Her sacrifice, patriotism, and steadfast support will forever be remembered with deep respect.
