A village doctor is a familiar, dependable, and highly respected figure in the rural life of Bangladesh. In our villages, where modern hospitals, diagnostic centers, and MBBS doctors are scarce, the village doctor serves as the first and primary healthcare provider for poor villagers. He usually operates from a modest dispensary at the local village market or bazaar, stocked with basic allopathic medicines, syrups, bandages, and injections. He carries a small medical bag containing a stethoscope, blood pressure monitor, and thermometer, visiting sick patients at their doorsteps day and night. Although most village doctors do not hold high institutional degrees, their long practical experience enables them to diagnose and treat common ailments like seasonal fever, cold, diarrhea, dysentery, stomach aches, and minor wounds. They prescribe affordable medicines and often treat poor villagers on credit or free of cost. When patients suffer from critical diseases, a wise village doctor promptly refers them to the nearest Upazila health complex. The village doctor is a true friend and savior of rural folk.

পল্লী চিকিৎসক বা গ্রাম্য ডাক্তার হলেন গ্রামীণ জনপদে অত্যন্ত পরিচিত, নির্ভরযোগ্য ও শ্রদ্ধেয় একজন মানুষ। আমাদের দেশের গ্রামগুলোতে যেখানে আধুনিক হাসপাতাল বা বিশেষজ্ঞ এমবিবিএস চিকিৎসকের অভাব রয়েছে, সেখানে এই পল্লী চিকিৎসকই গ্রামের দরিদ্র মানুষের প্রাথমিক চিকিৎসার প্রধান ভরসা। স্থানীয় বাজারে তাঁর একটি ছোট ওষুধের দোকান থাকে; যেখানে প্রয়োজনীয় ট্যাবলেট, সিরাপ, ইনজেকশন ও ব্যান্ডেজ সংরক্ষিত থাকে। হাতে স্টেথোস্কোপ, থার্মোমিটার ও রক্তচাপ মাপার যন্ত্র নিয়ে তিনি দিন-রাত রোগীর ডাক পেলেই ছুটে যান। যদিও অধিকাংশ গ্রাম্য ডাক্তারের বড় কোনো ডিগ্রি থাকে না, তবুও দীর্ঘদিনের বাস্তব অভিজ্ঞতার কারণে সাধারণ জ্বর, সর্দি, কাশি, পেটের পীড়া এবং সাধারণ আঘাতের প্রাথমিক চিকিৎসা তিনি দক্ষতার সাথে দেন। তিনি রোগীদের সাশ্রয়ী ওষুধ দেন এবং অনেকের চিকিৎসা বাকিতে বা বিনামূল্যেও করেন। জটিল রোগী দেখলে তিনি কালবিলম্ব না করে সরকারি হাসপাতালে যাওয়ার পরামর্শ দেন। গ্রাম্য ডাক্তার হলেন সাধারণ মানুষের এক পরম বিশ্বস্ত বন্ধু।
