1. Introduction:
Bangladesh is a riverine country. Hundreds of big and small rivers flow across our land like a network of silver ribbons. Rivers are the lifeblood of our agriculture, commerce, and nature.
2. Principal Rivers:
The main rivers of Bangladesh are the Padma, the Meghna, the Jamuna, the Brahmaputra, and the Karnafuli. Most of these rivers originate in the Himalayas and flow down into the Bay of Bengal.
3. Blessings of Rivers:
Rivers bring fertile silt during floods, which makes our land soft and highly suitable for bumper crops of rice and jute. Rivers are also our cheapest waterways for carrying goods and passengers. Furthermore, rivers provide us with huge supplies of delicious fish like Hilsa and Rui.
4. Disadvantages and Floods:
Rivers sometimes cause sorrow as well. Heavy monsoon rains cause severe floods and riverbank erosion. Every year, many villagers lose their homesteads, lands, and crops due to fierce river waves.
5. Conclusion:
Despite occasional river erosion, the rivers are our greatest national blessing. We must protect our rivers from industrial pollution and illegal grabbing so that they can flow healthily forever.
