1. Introduction:
Flood is a common natural calamity in Bangladesh. Almost every year, large parts of our low-lying country go under water during the monsoon season.
2. Causes of Floods:
There are several causes of floods. The main causes are heavy rainfall during the monsoon, melting of snow in the Himalayas, and overflow of our major rivers. Deforestation and siltation on riverbeds also reduce water-carrying capacity.
3. Havoc and Damages:
Floods bring untold misery to people. Standing crops like paddy and vegetables are washed away. Mud houses collapse, roads and railways are damaged, and schools remain closed. Pure drinking water becomes scarce, leading to waterborne diseases like cholera and diarrhea.
4. Positive Side:
However, floods have one benefit too. Flood water leaves behind fertile silt on agricultural fields, which increases soil fertility and helps farmers harvest abundant crops in the dry season.
5. Remedial Measures and Conclusion:
We cannot stop floods completely, but we can reduce their damage. River dredging, building strong flood embankments, and setting up flood shelters are necessary steps. Timely government relief and disaster management can save thousands of human lives.
